20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Bug Eyed Anhinga

During January to March is mating season for the Anhinga water fowl. During this time, the males eye leather changes to these dramatic cerulean blue and green colors. I am fortunate to live close to the Wahkodahatchee Wetland reserve nearby here in Florida, where I can spend hours watching these birds waiting for the right moment. Normally they are buried deep in the thicket or preening. I've always wanted a photo straight on because I think it would be an interesting perspective and maybe a bit comical.
