Hardy People

This small cemetery resides in the shadows of magnificently colored buttes near the ghost town of Paria, Utah. Settled in the 1860s, the original pioneers battled isolation and the harsh environment. Eventually overgrazing and repeated flooding of the Paria River took its toll and Paria was abandoned in the 1920s. In 1930 a movie set was built here and many westerns were filmed, including some scenes of the Outlaw Josey Wales. In 2006 the movie set fell victim to arson. Now nothing is left in Paria but this cemetery with 20 weathered stones. A sign on the fence states: These people had a hard life but they were hardy people. Alta Mae Hansen, great granddaughter of Susan Reynold Smith and Thomas Washington Smith, both of whom are buried in this cemetery.
