18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
On the Brink

“On the Brink” features some of Australia’s most endangered flora and fauna, including the regent honeyeater and the Wollemi pine. The photographs within this composite piece were all taken at conservation gardens and wildlife rehabilitation centers throughout Australia in the past year, guided by horticulturalists and wildlife carers. Included are 7 bird species and 30 plant species, along with the tiny corroboree frog, all classified as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. By co-opting photographs of threatened flora and fauna into this contemporary photographic piece, a new perspective on Australia’s biodiversity crisis is revealed. It encourages, with urgency, protecting and recovering Australian threatened species.
