A group of boys watching a dance ceremony in their village
Hal Schneider (San Diego, CA)
Photographed November 2006, near Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
Masked dancers greeted Schneider's tour group on a visit to the village of Boni, well off the beaten track in West Africa's Burkina Faso, but he was drawn to a group of watchful boys instead. "I wanted to capture that look of curiosity of these kids," says Schneider. —Abigail Tucker

intense, enigmatic expressions which clearly are also watching the ceremony of their photograph being taken

This moment has that essence of being there, as if we are standing before them, breathing their same air. Quality in art is the ability to express this experience even in our absence of such a vital breath.

In my opinion, the best of the photos. Really captures the intense feelings of the subjects.
