18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
100 years of change
The famous steeples of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City surrounded by tall sky scrappers. When these steeples were erected in 1888, it was the tallest structure in NYC. On a good day, you can see the Atlantic Ocean from the top. The picture also reflected the change in value in the last 100 years. Where the steeples were decorative and detailed construction, the sky scrapers surrounding it are examples of vertical utilitarian construct.
