400 Languages - A young Aboriginal boy in authentic dress
From the series: Paradise Promised. Prior to the arrival of Columbus in 1492, North America was densely populated. It has been estimated that 92 million Aboriginal people speaking 425 different languages inhabited this great expanse before it was 'discovered'. By the late 1500's, though, as much as 90% of this population had been wiped out by diseases brought to the continent by early explorers.
