14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A 60 ft wave breaks at Waimea after the Eddie Aikau Contest concludes.
The "Eddie Aikau" contest is a big wave competition that only happens when the conditions are perfect. The waves have to be over 40ft face with perfect winds and weather from 8am-4pm. 2016 was the first time the contest ran since 2009. I was fortunate to capture this amazing moment while the last of the crowd left after the contest concluded. Over 50,000 people showed up and I slept in my car to beat 8 hrs of traffic.
