A backlit humpback whale in Grenville Channel, the Inside Passage, BC, Canada.

This humpback surfaced just off our bow as we were transiting Grenville Channel in our petroleum-free sailboat powered by 100% recycled food processing oil-based biodiesel and bio-lubricants. For the last eight years we have been voyaging in northern BC and Alaska while giving tours and sharing information with other boaters on how easy and beneficial - to marine life, humans, the climate and boat engines - it is to go petroleum free. This year I interviewed many fuel dock managers, commercial fisherman and local citizens about working together to add biodiesel pumps along the full length of the Inside Passage and have now started this bit project with a number of key partners. I took the shot rather quickly then turned the boat hard to starboard to move safely away from the whale. I didn't notice the rich backlighting and twinkling swells in the background until later in the day.
