16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A beautiful sunset taken from slightly below the south rim of the grand canyon, facing north.

My family and I took a trip out west this summer to escape my home state of Virginia. Everything I saw on this week long trip was astounding and unprecedented, but one of my favorite memories was driving all day just to make it to the Canyon before sunset. It was a goal of mine to capture this beautiful time. When the sun finally set, it was more dazzling than I could have expected. There was another group sharing the point with my family, an they were all cheering me on as my shutter kept snapping, afraid to miss a second of the beauty. It was a quiet, simple and beautiful time that holds a lot of meaning for me.
