A bird in dead flight

This is a rephotograph--a photo on my phone of a photo I made with a disposable camera. This is a test of values. This is a desire to reconnect. This is a goal to kill to live. This photograph is set in Panama, where a family and I killed a chicken. My intention was to challenge: if I want to continue eating chicken, I don't want to be distant from that process and receive prepared chicken breasts from a grocery fridge. I wanted to face reality, because if I couldn't, my life had to change. Too often, our modern world separates us from the atrocity, the oppression, the pain that undergirds our existence. This photo is my refusal to run. Yet isn't it telling, an experience that affirmed me killed another?
