14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A break in the clouds, sunlight on the opposite shore, Brule River.

I had been staying at a cabin on the river for the month of February. It had been grey for almost two weeks straight. I returned to the river in the afternoon to this perfect afternoon sunlight breaking through these dark low hanging clouds. The contrast was spectacular. I ran to the riverbank and took as many shots as I could to capture my 15 minutes of glorious sun. This was the first inkling that spring was around the corner.
