19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Cooper's Hawk splashes water everywhere as it bathes in a shallow eddy of a river, its nictitating membrane drawn over its eye for protection.

I was sitting in camouflage on a river gravel bar when this adult Cooper's Hawk, presumably a female because of its large size, suddenly dropped into the water at the edge of the opposite bank directly across from me, and began bathing. Trying not to spook her as I shot, I was able to get frames of her submerging, splashing, preening, and shaking water off. I thought this was the most interesting frame because it clearly shows she has drawn the nictitating membrane shut over her eye to protect it from the water. This is a rare insight into the lifestyle and behavior of one of North America's more common raptors, a bird specialist that preys primarily on pigeons, doves, and songbirds.
