16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A crab blending in with the white sand treads its way back to the water as the tides recede.

White sand beaches are very popular in the Philippines. This particular photo was taken during an island hopping excursion in the Britannia Islands in Surigao. This little crab looked like a stone as its claws and legs seamlessly melded with its main armor. Its color perfectly blends with the sand; a natural camouflage to protect it from its predators. It was a beautiful creature! As the tides were receding, this fella carefully crawled its way to the water as the sun's heat will kill it. We noticed that it indeed was heading to the direction of a shallow pool. This is a testament on the vulnerability of numerous marine species to global warming and climate change.
