A Dia de los Muertos altar (memorial) remembering Black people killed by police violence
I was attending a local Dia de los Muertos festival when I noticed a large altar adorned with sweet bread, marigolds, and monarch butterflies, all of which help those who have passed find their way back to their families. This altar was remembering Sonya Massey, as well as all Black people killed by police violence and children killed by gun violence. Usually, altars are made for specific family members, so I was somewhat surprised to see this. It reminded me that even though our political climate is turbulent right now (police/gun violence being a long-standing problem), there is still potential for good in all of us.
