While on a pelagic birding expedition off around the Channel Islands, a fair distance from the coast, the largest dolphin pod I'd ever seen swam past our boat. These were common dolphin, and they were playing in the waves as dolphin often do. This particular photo captured in mid air what appears to be a dolphin family jumping unison. It was indeed a perfect acrobatic choreography. One would think the parents were teaching their baby how escape the ocean and fly through the air, even if briefly. It was pretty amazing to watch.
