A family tending their salt pond at Salinas de Maras in Peru

Peru's Sacred Valley has the ancient salt pond that are still in use today. Salinas de Maras is now a community-driven, low-tech industry existing unbroken for more than eight hundred years. The people harness the hot water springs from the mountain and use evaporation to get various salts: from cooking salts to mineral and bath salts. It is a community-driven enterprise, paying more than other industries this place that is rich with history and time has almost forgotten.
