12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A fern finds room to grow on a rock wall.

The basalt rock along the St. Croix River has nooks and crannies where life burst forth. This fern was growing at my eye level (5 feet above ground) and reaching toward the river.
