A Fulani boy poses with his cattle. I took this picture in Nigeria’s Plateau State, where herdsmen and farmers are engaged in deadly conflict. Fleeing from violence caused by Boko Haram and severe droughts caused by climate change, Islamic Fulani herdsmen are entering the domain of Christian farmers, leading to a vicious circle of violence. To understand both sides of the conflict, I spent time days with the herdsmen and several days with the farmers.
