The slums of Dhaka have minimal access to basic needs and are inundated with preventable illness and a stark absence of opportunity. As the population is so concentrated and the resources so strained, most of the individuals living here have no access to consistent primary health care nor education. The community health workers with whom I work are this community’s most consistent connection to the greater healthcare system and health education. As I walked through the pathways of the slums of Dhaka, there she was, standing at the end of the rained soaked alley way. At this moment, and for every moment moving forward, this little girl has represented all children of the slums of Dhaka, but in particular, and most obviously, the girl child. A child without the opportunity to thrive, a child who will, for most of her life, struggle to survive and be equal to her male counterparts in a culture that prioritizes boys and men. She represents human rights. She represents gender equality. She represents my purpose.
