23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
A Grand Refugio
I had 24 hours to do the 7 lakes trek in the Julian Alps of Slovenia. After run-walking more than half, I came upon a refugio too gorgeous to skip. This pristine castle graced the wilderness and offered a bunk for a meager $10.
