A Gray Whale spyhopping in the Bahia de Magdelena in Baja Califormia Sur
Spyhopping is a singular behavior, separate from breaching, where whales come slowly above the water until their eyes are in the air. You can see it just above the water's surface. It enables them to take an extended look around above the surface to see what is nearby and probably to socialize. This whale did it while fairly close to our small boat. The many scars on its skin are a journal of the barnacles which have attached over the years to get a free ride through the water, as they search for prey to grab.
