22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A handmade headstone honoring the life and tragic death of an unhoused Denver resident
The memorial was created by those who witnessed the death of Austin, whose last name remains unknown. Austin was run over and killed by a semi-truck transporting building materials to a nearby construction site for the Arkins Promenade- a high-end apartment complex being constructed across the street from the homeless shelter. Prior to his gruesome death, Austin had allegedly smoked fentanyl, causing him to fall, incapacitated, underneath the rear wheels of the passing truck.
