17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A herd of Branta hutchinsii that has resurrected from extinction.
It was thought that they stopped flying to Japan after 1930, but several of them were observed in the 1960s. After that, a revival plan was launched, and now there are 5000 birds.
