22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Home Lost to Humanity
Perched up in a tree, I captured this poignant moment as an orangutan climbed closer, drawn by the hope of finding food. From my vantage, I could see a striking contrast to the broken wilderness surrounding us. This gentle creature, once free to roam vast forests, is now forced into reliance on feeding platforms due to the widespread destruction of its habitat for palm oil plantations. Through this image, I hope to reveal the fragile existence these orangutans now face and to stir a sense of urgency for the world to recognize and act upon this reality before it’s too late.
