14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A large cane haul truck follows a dirt road through tall sugar cane on Hawaii's last sugar plantation., now ending operations.

The cane fields stretched across the isthmus of Maui and from sea level well up the slopes of Haleakala Volcano. The main highway to upcountry runs through the fields, giving views of the crop and its growers. In this view the masssive cane haul truck barely rises above the maturing crop.
