22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A Life Stocked

My photo is showing cattle in a feedlot with a sign behind them that states "Eat Beef Keep Slim" which is located in Garden City, Kansas. I feel that this image shows a lot of emotion given that in the American life we rely heavily on cattle to provide meat and keep people fed in the United States. For the most part, cattle are born to be bred or are born to be sold and processed. They serve a major purpose in our country with minimal time in both their age and in their life experiences. Feedlots show how much we utilize cattle in all senses of what they can provide for the typical American life. With that, there are people in this country who have never seen both the sadness yet effectiveness of a feedlot. I feel that my photograph has the impact to show the true emotions of what feedlots offer.
