Caption: Hope The boy in the photograph is 13 years old. He works as a child labour in a coal mine of Jharia in Jharkhand,India. It's a difficult and risky job for a teenager. The coal mine area has an ever changing geography as land slides, regualrly appearing fissures on the ground and an ever spreading underground fire, burning for over 60 years are factors influencing the daily lives of the local residents. In a day, the boy collects about 30-40 kgs of coal. Then after carrying it back to his home a couple of kilometres away from the mines,he has to roast them for 6 to 7 hours. The roasted coal can then be sold in the local market.Like many others, this boy has also been employed into this job through family recommendations. His parents have been doing it before him. Although it's an illegal profession and they can be jailed if caught. Yet lots of people in the area have no other option but to get into this risky business as their livelihood depends on it. The boy does go to a school and studies as much as he can. He told me, that he wants to be a teacher when he grows up; but right now, has to help support his family. So early morning each day, he goes to the mining site, then comes back and goes to school.
