14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A lone musk ox in the wild.
Musk ox are usually in groups but this loner traveled south from the Seward Peninsula to near the Norton Sound Coast of Alaska. This photo was taken in late June when most of it's qiviut or natural hair shed on willows and branches.
