A Male Harlequin Duck Emerges from a River
Every spring, harlequin ducks make a latitudinal migration from the Pacific coast inland to mountain streams where they make their nests before heading back to the coast in the fall. Their arrival in my childhood home near Glacier National Park in Montana was something I looked forward to and I spent many hours dedicated to watching these special animals careen around in the rapids of McDonald Creek. Their habitat across the west is threatened due to the effects of climate change and I sincerely hope that we don't lose this precious animal.
