A Male Harlequin Duck in Glacier National Park

Harlequin ducks are special animals. Every year they fly from the Pacific coast inland to nest in fast-moving, mountainous streams. Some fly as far as Glacier National Park in Montana, where I shot this frame. Having grown up in Montana, theses ducks have held a special place in my heart becoming a symbol of home as well as an example of the connectivity of nature. I have at times been moved nearly to tears watching these stunning little ducks navigating the harsh, freezing waters of McDonald Creek, occupying their niche with such boldness and beauty.
