Portraiture captures a mixture of the subject's current state and the reactionary state of being asked to pose. The interaction of the two is more pronounced in street portraiture. A sad man lost deeply in his thoughts feeling flattered, an anxious lady feeling more self-conscious, etc. The act of photography influencing the photograph itself, I find it most appealing.
