A man stands in a field of high growing industrial hemp plants in Ukraine

The entrepreneur Yuri Marchuk walks through his industrial hemp field, which he started growing in order to supply the hemp-chives for the building process. The urgent need for renewable and ecological materials to replace our modern, polluting building materials like cement, steel and concrete can be accomplished with hemp-lime building materials. In the face of war, Ukrainians have found a solution that builds upon their long tradition of cultivating industrial hemp. The hemp industry is already addressing 9 out of the 17 SDG goals and could help to turn one of the largest carbon emitters, the construction industry into an absorber. When hemp is grown, the carbon sequestration happens underground, in the root system. Together with the biomass above and underneath the ground, hemp can sequester 100 tons of Co2 per ha.
