17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Martian river

The unique orange color of this river gives the characteristic name of Rio Tinto. High levels of iron and other heavy metals come from the mining extractions since 3000 BC by Iberians, Greeks, Romans, and Moors, amongst others. Despite these extreme environmental conditions, there is still habitat to bacteria or algae, where NASA has put their interest to future space research.
