While visiting Okinawa over the summer I went to the Makishi Public Market in Naha City. While browsing the market I notices two young women standing stationary as they reviewed their own travel photos, all while the market continued to rush around them. The shop they were loitering by sells refreshments unique to Okinawa: At the center of the shop's display a jar of Habushu (sea-snake wine) was flanked by the ubiquitous pair of Shisa (Ryukyuan Lion-Dog Guardians), advertisements for mango and shequasar (Okinawa lime) shaved-ice lined the side of the shop. All reminders that this Japanese island operates at its own pace and was once culturally very different from mainland Japan.
