20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A monarch butterfly on bullrush.

This monarch was drawn to my garden by milkweed, but decided to rest on bullrush in between rounds of pollination. Lepidoptera don't routinely pay visits to this variety of plant, so I felt lucky when this butterfly stopped by the unique flora.
