17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A monitor lizard and its forked tongue

The appearance of a monitor lizard at the hide was a complete surprise. I was set up to take wide-angle shots of large animals and had to grab my telephoto in order to get this shot. I particularly wanted to get a shot with its tongue out.
