15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A mule team descending the Grand Canyon's Bright Angel Trail.

Since the late 1800s, mule teams have been making their way in and out of the Grand Canyon. They were introduced mostly for tourism, and were probably one of the first of many commercial enterprises that would one day beset the South Rim. However, today they still evoke a little bit of that quaint and at the same time grand image of the American West.
