19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A New Perspective

The one day of the year I decide to visit the Antelope Canyon Upper Slot Canyon, and it rains. It doesn’t just rain, it pours. And of course, it floods. This picture was taken as the slot canyon was being pelted with rain. The red dirt was coming down all around me and this picture shows the beauty of the famously pictured upper antelope canyon when the sun’s not shining. As we were running out of the slot canyon so we wouldn’t be buried, I captured this shot.
