15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A north American alligator moving through marshland in south Texas.

This is one of five known alligators that inhabited a marshland known as The Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas. This was taken pre-Harvey. The photographer refers to the period in time prior to hurricane Harvey because the area now is completely decimated, and most of the wildlife is now gone. This was one of the smaller gators.
