13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A photo juxtaposing the attraction of San Francisco for young queer folks with the impossibly high price of housing.

This image, taken on San Francisco's Castro Street, captures the struggle that many young queer folks face. San Francisco, the "queer mecca," is a dream destination for young people in the LGBT community, who face stronger discrimination in other parts of the country. However, when they arrive in San Francisco, they are faced with impossibly high housing prices, and very few affordable options. This is the reason for the absurdly high numbers of homeless queer youth in San Francisco.
