13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
A photo of a DC Ducks tour underway.
A photograph of a DC Ducks tours bus, which historically was first called a DKW and originally rejected by the US armed services for its original use. Its original intended use was a way of getting supplies across the water and land on European beaches in the 1940s. After rescuing a United States Coast Guard Patrol Craft on the east coast, the White House recognized the mobile units' usefulness, and began to employ them to carry supplies. Now the restored and re-purposed DC Ducks are used to offer visitors from all over the world a journey back in time, and are an amazing tribute to the ingenuity of United States inventors.
