A portrait of Liberty

On my first visit to the iconic island, I set myself the challenge of capturing an image of the statue that I had never seen before. Once I found the framing, I waited about two hours for the sun to illuminate only one of the walls in the foreground. The metaphor and symbolism were already there—the background was set—but I still needed something in terms of form. That’s why I waited to photograph one wall in shadow contrasted with another bathed in light. That disparity is what led me to take the picture at that moment. And yes, the art of photography is the desire to hold light still for an instant.
