Following an incident in June 2021 in which a Black woman was dragged by her hair down the stairs of Nellie's Sports Bar in Shaw, Washington D.C., the Boycott Nellie's movement formed. Weekly block parties every Friday outside of the bar began in early summer, with the goal of pursuing justice through Black joy and resilience.
