14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A red-eyed tree frog and its nictitating membrane.

This tree frog is giving us the stink eye as we bother it during one of our many night hikes at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica. The eyelid that is coming up from the bottom of the frog's eye is called the nictitating membrane--it is for extra protection!
