22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A risky habbit
Every morning, several wild elephants, including this one, would position themselves along a busy road near Yala national park waiting for passing vehicles. Over time, they had learned to expect food from people, a habit that, though seemingly harmless significantly alters their natural behaviors and leading to concerning environmental issues, including increased human-elephant conflict. The elephants’ dependence on vehicle handouts disrupts their natural foraging, making them more likely to approach humans, sometimes aggressively, which poses risks to both people and wildlife.
