12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A single lightning strike over a mountain top cross.
This was an impromptu photograph of lightning as it passed over the top of a large cross standing on the top of a hill in Lometa, Texas. While driving, I noticed the lightning moving towards the cross and pulled over just in time to set my camera up and capture this one bolt as it spread across the sky. The cross belongs to a church and is illuminated at night by lights.
