16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Staring Sheep

It was a class assignment, all students had to visit the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve running along UC Davis campus. We had to write an argumentative paper addressing whether UC Davis was doing a good job of wildlife conservation on campus based off of Putah Creek. In order to make an argument, however, we were tasked to observe various things throughout the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve and the UC Davis Arboretum. When my friend and I started the walk along the reserve everything was splendid, but there was a certain point in the field trip when the all the vegetation from the reserve transformed into barren and broken soil. We had come across a livestock farm, that unfortunately, had transformed an entire ecosystem. The livestock, mostly sheep like the one above, were seen in this example of humans’ introduction of livestock into a natural area.
