A stranded boat on a drying lake

A boat lies stranded on on the edge of a subsiding Cerknica Lake, one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. The lake is in fact a large karstic field with several sinkholes where the water drains into. The boat is seen stranded across a dirtroad that is just re-emerging as the water level drops. At its fullest the lake covers a surface of nearly 30 km2. In the past it dried out about once in seven years, but today it dries out up to four times a year due to past human interventions in this fragile landscape and climate change. Such frequency is endangering the reproduction cycles of animals living here. With the help of the European Union the lake is now being renaturalized in an effort to reduce the frequency of drying out.
