A strange couple

On a sweltering August afternoon, two cone-headed grasshoppers (Acrida ungarica) gaze directly into the camera while resting among field eryngo thistles (Eryngium campestre). The serenity of the scene allowed me to set up two backlighting flashes, mount the camera on a tripod, and carefully frame the shot to capture the symmetry of the encounter. Finally, I waited for the moment when the evening glow wrapped the scene, revealing the beauty of a species that is often ignored.
