15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A thriving summer hibiscus.

The hibiscus flower can take a while to bloom, but its vibrancy is undeniable once it does. It is a fleeting flower, wilting quickly, so to see a full bloom is special. It reminds me of how we get to know others, and how special it is to see them in full bloom.
